Michael R. Nelson, Artist
Early Passion for Art
From a young age, I have felt a deep passion for art. Life’s circumstances often shape our career paths, and in my case, I found myself pursuing a career in law enforcement. This profession left little time for me to nurture my artistic interests. However, upon retiring, I transitioned fully into art, trading my gun and badge for a paintbrush.
Artistic Medium and Influences
My journey as an artist began with acrylic paints, but over time, I found myself drawn exclusively to oils. I dedicate myself to creating paintings that communicate the beauty of the natural world, both to myself and to others. At an early age, I was inspired by Hudson Valley artists such as Bierstadt, Cole, and Moran, whose landscape paintings demonstrated remarkable attention to detail.
Exploring Artistic Themes
I have intentionally resisted the urge to limit myself to a single theme, such as seascapes or wildlife. Instead, I continually explore new possibilities in my art, choosing subjects that I find enjoyable and intriguing. This approach also allows me to challenge myself and develop my skills as an artist.
Observational Skills
Strong observational skills are essential for any artist. It is important to closely examine a subject to perceive its texture, form, and variations in color and value. I strive to accurately represent my subjects by applying fundamental principles of composition and color theory.
Continual Artistic Growth
My artistic process involves extensive time spent gathering reference materials and researching concepts for future works. Art, for me, is an ongoing journey—one of learning new techniques and refining those I have already mastered. If I ever get to the point where I think I know everything about producing quality artworks, I’ll hang up my brush next to my gun. After all, the enjoyment is in the journey, not necessarily the destination.
