During the late 1800's, in many areas of the western territories, the U.S. Marshal was the sole guardian of the rule of law and was the only one standing between law-abiding citizens and criminals. He traveled long distances, working long hours and endured many hardships to bring the lawless to justice. Sometimes, as depicted in the background of this painting, he had to put some six feet under, either by gun or by rope.
